Professor Olaf Drummer, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Scientific Services at the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) was recently awarded the prestigious Jean Servais Stas Medal in recognition of his achievements in the field of forensic chemistry. Olaf was presented with the award at the biennial meeting of the German Society of Toxicology and Forensic Chemistry (GTFCh) in Mosbach, Germany.
The award is named after Jean Servais Stas (1813 ‐ 1891), a renowned Belgian analytical chemist who, in collaboration with Jean-Baptiste Dumas, established the atomic weight of carbon and was also the first scientist to develop a universal extraction system for alkaloids in human tissues, which was used successfully by many laboratories until quite recently.
This award reinforces both Olaf's and VIFM’s reputation as being at the forefront of forensic toxicology.
