Professor Peter Cameron - transforming emergency medical care in Qatar

Peter Cameron

Professor Peter Cameron (currently on leave from his position as Head of the Critical Care Division at SPHPM and Academic Director at The Alfred Emergency & Trauma Center ) has been appointed Chairman of Emergency at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha, Qatar.  Hamad Medical Corporation is the largest not-for-profit healthcare provider in Qatar, providing healthcare to 90% of the nation’s population.

In 2011 HMC created Qatar’s Academic Health System (AHS) aimed at improving patient care, staff training and education for new generations of healthcare workers, and supporting medical research.  Implementation of the AHS strategy resulted in the creation of a program for the modernisation and development of emergency medicine, and this work is being led by Peter  Cameron.

The new work plan is a significant change for the department.  It focuses on four major areas: clinical operations, clinical informatics and quality, staff education and emergency medicine research. In addition to the formulation of new patient treatment guidelines, Peter has also established the first emergency medical research unit in Qatar. The unit is already academically linked with Monash University and plans to develop further linkages with other institutions.

As Peter heads into his second year as Chairman he is keen to develop a sustainable governance structure, clinical operational model, training and research program to ensure that Qatar enjoys the highest level of emergency care into the future.
