SPHPM Sri Lankan Trainees visit Baker IDI

The Baker IDI hosted a visit for Dr’s Vajira Nanayakkara, Supun Wijesinghe, Thilanga Ruwanpathirana, Irosha Nilaweera and Bhanuja Wijayatilaka, Sri Lankan Trainees based at the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine.  Associate Professor, Professor Simon Stewart and Dr Melinda Carrington presented an excellent overview about the ongoing multi-centre clinical trials carried out at the Baker IDI.

As obesity is an emerging problem in Sri Lanka, especially among school aged children, this was a fantastic opportunity for these trainees to gain a better understanding of the preventive activities carried out in Australia to reduce obesity. Dr Thilanga said “We have only a few programs available to reverse obesity trends in Sri Lanka, as under-nutrition is still a problem”. He further explained that this visit will help in designing preventative strategies to counter the obesity issue in Sri Lanka.
