Congratulations to a team led by Professor Brian Oldenburg in securing a NHMRC Partnership grant titled ‘Improving the health of people with Type 2 diabetes using information and communication technology.’ This project is funded by the NHMRC, together with Diabetes Queensland, Diabetes Australia – Victoria, Diabetes Western Australia and Roche Diagnostics Australia Pty Ltd.The new research project builds on 10 years of extensive research in Australia developing and evaluating an automated and interactive conversational program – Australia TLC Diabetes Program - that people can access via their phone. Professor Oldenburg and his research team have demonstrated that this program improves the management of blood glucose control and quality of life for people who have Type 2 diabetes from trials that have been conducted in Queensland.
In the proposed project, the program will be offered to several hundred individuals in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia with Type 2 diabetes newly registered on the National Diabetes Services Scheme. It will evaluate the program’s effectiveness, adoption, implementation and maintenance of effect.
The Australian TLC Diabetes program aims to deliver a much needed effective form of support to a large number of people with Type 2 diabetes in a low cost, convenient and most accessible way, critical in addressing the Australian challenge of delivering services to rural and regional communities separated by large distances and facing limited resources. It has the potential to improve quality of life and decrease the risk of diabetes complications.
