Funding received for registry of kidney diseases

The Department of Health has provided funding for a registry of kidney diseases to be run by the Department of Epidemiology & Preventative Medicine, led by Adjunct Clinical Professor Rowan Walker.

The funds will go towards establishing a comprehensive dataset of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) across Victoria. This information will be used to come up with methods of slowing down and preventing the onset of CKD.

The registry will include patient demographics, details of diagnosis and interventions and health outcomes, with the potential to be expanded into other areas beyond CKD.

For the time being, it will look at diseases such as autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), primary focal segmental glomerulonephritis, 1omembranous glomerulonephritis, diabetic nephropathy in type I diabetics, IgA nephropathy, and Alport Syndrome.

Participating hospitals include The Alfred, The Austin, Monash Health (Southern), The Royal Melbourne hospital, St. Vincent’s and Western Health.
