Managing aged care needs during a heatwave

mcInnes 125The Australian Healthcare and Hospitals Association (AHHA) has highlighted an article by Judith McInnes and Professor Joseph Ibrahim (Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine) titled 'Preparation essential in aged care ahead of rising temperatures', published in its latest edition of The Australian Health Review.

McInnes and Ibrahim estimate that there are twice as many deaths resulting from heatwave than there are from floods or cyclones.

They interviewed  representatives from Victorian aged care services to find out more about their heatwave preparation and action plan.   The interview-based study reported an extensive, well considered approach to harm minimisation, facilitated by staff awareness and experience, and having a written heatwave plan.

The study emphasised the importance  of  a heatwave action plan to prevent harm to aged care residents during soaring temperatures.
