Polycystic Ovary Syndrome could be reborn under the new title “metabolic reproductive syndrome” as part of a new impetus to make the condition less confusing to both patients and primary care physicians. Experts believe that the current name is both ambiguous and misleading, and does not reflect the broader psychological and metabolic impacts of the syndrome.
Professor Helena
Teede of the DEPM has published a new study which aims to quantify patients
and physicians understanding of PCOS, its symptoms and causes. The patients and
practitioners involved were quizzed on the symptoms and causes of PCOS to
determine their general understanding. Whilst many patients were able to
recognise the symptoms, 47% of patients incorrectly identified ovarian cysts as
a cause.
Most primary care physicians felt the name was confusing
(74%) and needs changing (81%), however opinions were divided on specific
alternative names.
