ARC Linkage Grant Success for Jean Hailes Research Unit

JHRU

Congratulations to Maggie Kirkman, Jane Fisher and Amy Dobson (Jean Hailes Research Unit) who have been successful in obtaining an ARC Linkage Grant totalling $327,220 for a study titled “Elucidating the increasing demand for genital cosmetic surgery among girls and women in Australia”.  Maggie, Jane and Amy are Chief Investigators, in partnership with the Australian Federation of Medical Women, Family Planning Victoria, Southern Health and Women’s Health Victoria.

The Study will focus on the dramatic rise in female genital cosmetic surgery in Australia, interpreting the phenomenon within a gendered understanding of health in society. The Study will involve in-depth interviews with women, consultation with key informants, an online survey, and analysis of social media.

Results will be used to contribute to programs in schools and online aimed at enhancing sexuality and body image education, as well as universal and targeted public health campaigns for the community about normal genital diversity, and professional development for doctors and beauty therapists.
