Pokie users endorse eftpos withdrawal limit in venues

Charles Livingstone 125More than half of poker machine users back the idea of an eftpos withdrawal limit, the Age reports.

A government-sponsored Swinburne University study examined problem gamblers, moderate gamblers and low-risk gamblers across Victoria. The vast majority of respondents in all three categories approved the idea of a withdrawal limit.

This follows the implementation of a cash machine ban in pokie venues last July, which led to problem gamblers spending around $90 less, and moderate risk gamblers spending $37 less, per visit to a club.

Monash University’s Dr Charles Livingstone, senior lecturer with the Department of Epidemiology and Preventative Medicine, said problem gamblers were still spending more money than they think they should. This is evidenced by the fact that problem gamblers in particular want eftpos machines removed.

There is currently a $200 withdrawal limit per transaction at pokie machine venues, but punters can use the eftpos machines through staff as many times as they want.

A government spokesman said: ''In light of the report's findings, the government will consider further action involving eftpos.''
