World First Monash/Alfred MRI Trial for Victorian Car Crash Victims

Aiden125Dr Aidan Burrell (DEPM PhD Candidate and Alfred Intensive Care trainee) is heading a Monash/Alfred trial, the first of its kind, using MRI to examine the hearts of trauma patients.  It is hoped that if heart injuries can be detected early using MRI, then treatment can be administered to patients early,  before irreversible damage has occurred.  The trial will involve patients who have suffered major trauma – particularly road trauma, which can sometimes result in severe chest injury and chest swelling, making other diagnostic methods less reliable.
