The Tide Cannot Be Turned Without Us: Sex Workers And The Global Response To HIV

Cheryl125An article by Dr Cheryl Overs and Associate Professor Bebe Loff from the Michael Kirby Centre, based on Dr Over's plenary presentation at the AIDS 2012 Conference in Washington has been published in the Journal of the International Aids Society (16:18459).   The authors have called for laws that will ensure that commercial sex takes place in the safest possible conditions, and for the meaningful involvement of sex workers at all levels of the decisions making process.  Whilst this has been acknowledged in theory in the past, it has not yet been achieved in practice.

Evidence shows that programmes that prevent HIV among sex workers and their clients are most successful when all aspects of vulnerability are addressed and when they are underpinned by policy that advances human rights. Law and policy on sex work should not be limited to aiming to deliver medicine and services to sex workers in dangerous working conditions.
