Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions but occurs most commonly among disadvantaged populations, a sub-population under-represented in traditional prevention approaches.

Andre Renzaho (DEPM) has received an ARC Linkage Grant titled “Community capacity building for healthy lifestyles (CBHL) initiative: engaging communities in childhood obesity prevention in disadvantaged areas”.  His project will develop and focus-test a new community engagement model to enable disadvantaged communities to more effectively address childhood obesity in their communities. Community engagement is an essential step in the creation of community plans, building social capital, and supporting those from disadvantaged communities to adopt healthy behaviours. The tested model can be adapted to inform large scale population-based interventions (inter)nationally.
