DEPM Visiting Academics Visit Medicare Local

Medicare Local 2

DEPM’s five visiting Sri Lankan academics, Drs Supun Wijesinghe, Irosha Nilaweera, Vajira Nanayakkara, Bhanuja Wijethilaka and Thilanga Runwanpathirana recently visited the Mornington Peninsula to attend a Program hosted by Prof Helen Keleher at the Frankston-Mornington Peninsula Medicare Local, to learn more about this recent innovation in Australian healthcare.

Professor Keleher introduced the doctors to Robyn Whyte, CEO, and various Medicare Local staff who took the time to explain all about various aspects of their operation.  Topics covered in the Program included what Medicare Local do, health problems commonly faced within their community, and how Medicare Local tackles these particular needs, including the introduction of various preventive programs.  An important component of being able to cater for individual community’s particular needs is the ability to utilise demographic mapping, and Medicare Local’s geographical mapping tools were also demonstrated.

The doctors were very grateful to Prof Keleher for hosting this program, and for being on hand to answer all of their questions.  Dr Wijesinghe commented that this was one of the best programs he had ever attended.
