Link found between air pollution and cardiac arrest

There could be a link between levels of air pollution and cardiac arrest, a new study has found.

An increase in particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns (PM2.5) was correlated with a more than 10 per cent increase in the risk of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, the study showed.

Bridging the gap between research and practice. Could social media be the missing link?


The purpose of all clinical research should be to improve outcomes, yet unless this research is effectively translated into practice by clinicians, even the largest studies can become useless.

Professor Malcolm Sim wins the Dean’s Award for Excellence in External Engagement


MonCOEH's Director Prof Malcolm Sim has been awarded the Dean’s Award for Excellence in External Engagement for his valuable work with a variety of national and international organisations These include the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the Australasian Fire and Emergency Service Authorities Council, the Defence Health Foundation and Safe Work Australia.  He is also on the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare’s Human Research Ethics Committee.

Dr Sara Holton wins publication prize

Dr Sara Holton of the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine has won the 2013 Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Faculty ECR Publication Prize, for public health research.

Funding awarded to evaluate the National Stroke Foundation’s awareness campaign

Funding has been awarded to a team led by Dr Janet Bray and Prof Judith Finn from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine's  Australian Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium (AusROC), to evaluate the effectiveness of the National Stroke Foundation’s 2014 awareness campaign.

The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in HealthCare has selected DEPM's Clinical Registry Unit, headed by Dr Sue Evans, as their preferred supplier for services in health information and data analysis, research and literature review and health information systems and web development.
